What Is a Pocket Beagle

WHAT IS A POCKET BEAGLE ????

A Pocket Beagle is a Beagle of course. It is just bred to be smaller in size.

A Pocket Beagle is a Beagle that is shorter than 13" and weighs less than 20 lbs, when full grown. The original Pocket Beagle originated in England hundreds of years ago. They were bred by hunters, so that they would be small enough to fit into small spaces, such as rabbit holes, under bushes, and they were small enough to fit into the hunters' satchels, hence the name "pocket". Their original title was Queen Elizabeth Pocket Beagles.

Are these the same dogs that orientated in England? The answer is no. The original Pocket Beagle never made it to the United States, and died off many, many years ago. The Pocket Beagles that we have today are again, Beagles that are bred small. They are considered Beagles under 13", according to the AKC. They cannot even be registered as a Pocket Beagle, only as a Beagle. And anyone claiming to have a Beagle that is registered as a Pocket Beagle, is a fraud. Today, breeders take two healthy small beagles and breed them to get them to have a uniquely small size. There are risks associated with breeding the runts of the litters, or small dogs. That is why we have our dogs fully screened and tested by our vet prior to breeding. We do not breed any dog that has not been fully checked out and tested by our vet, under any circumstances.

As far as their health is concerned, Beagles have some of the best history of health than most of the other breeds. This is one of the tragic reasons they use them for animal testing. Some of the health problems associated with Beagles include, glaucoma and hip and elbow dysplasia. There are a few others, but these are the main ones. But overall they are a very healthy breed. You also might ask yourself if the smaller, Pocket Beagles "howl" like the Beagle. Well, they can. I have been lucky with mine, and they do not. Most of the smaller beagles that are raised indoors, do not. Beagles are very curious dogs, and can be difficult to train. Their noses can carry them far far away, if not watched at all times. But, let me assure you that with a little patience and love...training can easily be accomplished.

Beagles are one of the top rated family dogs to own. They are excellent for families with small children, and they have one of the best temperaments I have ever seen in a dog. They also seem to do well when there are other pets present in the home. Beagles are very much so pack animals, so they always do well with other dogs. This of course, is not necessary when it comes to owning a beagle. The smaller beagles are also ideal for those that live in apartments or condos, or for those looking for a good family pet, but don't have a tremendous area for them to roam free. But of course, lots of space, or little space, they need daily walks and exercise, lots of attention, and a healthy diet.
